Man drowns in pond on Mebane farm

A man drowned in a pond on a private pond in Mebane on Sunday afternoon, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Two men were getting into a boat off a dock at the farm, at 8508 Harmony Church Road, off Lynch Road, around 3 p.m.

One man, however, missed the boat and fell straight into the pound, deputies said. He went under the water and never surfaced.

An Alamance County diving team found his body around 4:30 p.m. The body has been sent to the Office of the State Chief Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill.

Authorities withheld the name of the drowning victim, pending notification of family.
