Man collapses, dies in Durham jail

Authorities were investigating Friday the death of a man in the Durham County jail.

The man, whose name hasn't been released, was arrested by the State Highway Patrol and was taken to the jail at about 10 p.m. Thursday to go before a magistrate so bond could be set, authorities said. After that, he was in the jail's intake area for processing, where he collapsed.

Detention center medical staff provided assistance until paramedics arrived, but they weren't able to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at about midnight, authorities said.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

About a dozen inmates have died in the jail over the past decade, but authorities have said four of those cases were suicides and the rest involved chronic health issues.
