A man charged with exposing his genitals on campus at North Carolina State University has been arrested for indecent exposure at least eight times, according to arrest reports.

A spokesperson from N.C. State confirmed Courtney Mitchell, 34, was charged Tuesday with indecent exposure and resisting a public officer.

According to N.C. State, a female student told police a man exposed his genitals to her inside DH Hill Library.

Later Tuesday, police took Mitchell, who matched the victim's description, into custody.

The student identified Mitchell as the man she saw earlier.

The incident happened one day after classes started at N.C. State. Olivia McDonald, a student at N.C. State, said she's taking extra precautions following the indecent exposure.

“I just have my guard up more on campus in general,” McDonald said.

According to arrest records, Mitchell was charged with indecent exposure at least eight times since 2012.

According to defense attorney Lee Turner, indecent exposure is a class-two misdemeanor.

“The most a judge can do to this individual, as far as any active sentencing, is 60 days,” Turner said. “It’s not considered a serious crime.”

Students like McDonald say they worry repeat offenders, like Mitchell, making an unwanted presence in universities like N.C. State. She said she wants more regulation on the campus in a way that protects students and keeps accessibility available.

“Don’t give the public every privilege students have, but keep it in a way that’s accessible,” McDonald said.
