Man charged in I-440 wrong-way crash had previous DWI conviction

The driver charged with killing a man in a Sunday night crash on Interstate 440 in Raleigh had been convicted once before of driving while impaired, according to jail records.

Raleigh man faces multiple charges in deadly wrong-way crash

The driver charged with killing a man in a Sunday night crash on Interstate 440 in Raleigh had been convicted once before of driving while impaired, according to jail records.

Carlos Martinez Gonzalez, 40, is charged with felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired and driving without a license in Sunday's crash near Exit 10 (Wake Forest Road).

Investigators said Gonzalez was driving east in the westbound lanes when he hit 59-year-old Pareshkumar Shah at about 9:20 p.m.

Both drivers were transported to WakeMed following the crash. Shah died there as a result of his injuries.

According to jail records, Gonzalez has a history of driving-related offenses, including DWI and driving with a revoked license dating back to 2006 in Mecklenburg, Wake and Randolph counties.

Gonzalez is being held on a $200,000 bond.
