Man ambushed, shot another man after shooting ex-girlfriend's home, police say

Police in Wilson and Rocky Mount said 32-year-old Jerome Melvin shot into his ex-girlfriends home in Wilson late Friday night and later ambushed and shot a man who was in the home at the time.

Man ambushed, assaulted Wilson man after shooting ex-girlfriend's home, police say

A man is in custody after police say he ambushed another man in Rocky Mount after shooting into his his ex-girlfriend's home late Friday night into Saturday morning.

According to the Rocky Mount Police Department, officers found 31-year-old Eric Artis of Wilson in the parking lot of the Edgecombe Meadows apartment complex suffering from two gunshot wounds just after midnight.

As their investigation progressed, investigators learned that 32-year-old Jerome Melvin of Wilson shot into a home on Photinia Court in Wilson earlier in the evening on Friday. Artis and Melvin’s ex-girlfriend were inside the home at the time of the shooting.

Police said Artis was later ambushed in the Edgecombe Meadows parking lot in Rocky Mount and shot twice by Melvin.

EMS took Artis to ECU Health Medical Center for treatment, where he remains in serious condition.

It is currently unclear how much time passed between the apartment shooting and when police said Melvin ambushed Artis.

Authorities said Melvin was captured by the Wilson Police Department after a car chase.

Police in Rocky Mount charged Melvin with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Officers with the Wilson Police Department charged Melvin with multiple counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling, attempted murder, felony flee to elude and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Melvin is being held under a $2.5 million bond and was taken to the Wilson County jail.
