Deputies with the Johnston County Sheriff's Office attempted to conduct a vehicle stop on Monday afternoon when the driver started waving a machete out of the window.

At about 1:20 p.m., deputies attempted to stop Charles Terry Poole, who did not have a valid driver’s license. While attempting to stop him, he accelerated and began to wave a machete out of the window as he was fleeing, authorities said.

During the pursuit, and while waving the machete, Poole almost struck two school buses head on. Deputies made the decision to utilize a PIT maneuver to end the dangerous pursuit.

Authorities said the chase ended near a CVS Pharmacy on N.C. Highway 42. At the end of the chase, a struggle between Poole, deputies and a sheriff's office K9 ensued.

Authorities said Poole and a deputy were taken to WakeMed with non-life threatening injuries.

Charges are pending.
