A Lumberton High School freshman will be suspended for a full year after staff found a handgun and marijuana in his car on Thursday.

A teacher first reported smelling marijuana on the student, and staff responded by searching his car where they found the gun, the pot and a scale.

According to the school, the gun never made it into the school building and no one was injured.

The identity of the student, 17, will not be released because of his age.

“The Public Schools of Robeson County is committed to ensuring safe learning environments on our campuses across the district,” said Jessica Sealey, chief communications officer for the Public Schools of Robeson County.

“We continue to encourage students and staff members to speak up if they have any information concerning weapons or safety issues on our campuses,” she added.

It is the latest in a series of threats to student safety in central North Carolina this week.
