Along the Lumber River, echoes of Hurricane Florence had residents on alert as rain began to fall ahead of Tropical Storm Michael.

Rain was steady through the morning Thursday and expected to grow stronger throughout the afternoon and evening, with up to 5 inches in the forecast.

At noon, the river was a 11.5 feet and the water line from Florence was visible feet above the surface on bridge supports. A crest of 13.5 feet – minor flood stage – was expected on Friday evening.

By that time, skies should be clear and fast-moving Michael far out into the Atlantic Ocean.
