Credit unions are known for promoting the welfare of their members. They generally offer lower fees and higher savings account rates than traditional banking institutions, and they provide personalized customer service.

In addition to these benefits, RTP Federal Credit Union, which serves employees and members of over 300 businesses and associations in the greater Triangle area and surrounding areas, embraces core values that guide how it serves customers. These include recognition of member needs, protection of member assets, a passion for education, and a dedication to investment in the community.

"Investment in our community is one of the core values the RTP Credit Union family embraces to define, inform, and guide us each working day," said Lending Director, Robert Ruppenkamp.

That investment in the community includes supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina, the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, and the SPCA of Wake County.

Beyond these programs, the credit union also offers special discounts to members, including the Triangle’s first responders.

First responder discounts

People who respond to emergencies have the chance to enjoy special benefits at RTP Federal Credit Union.

"RTP CU’s first responder program offers discounted loan rates to qualified members as a way to honor them and provide them with the right financial services to achieve their goals," said Ruppenkamp.

The 0.25% loan rate reduction means borrowers will potentially save hundreds of dollars over the life of the loan.

"Our first responders loan program is designed to thank the service and sacrifice of the first responders in our community," said Jill Beck, Marketing and Member Services Director.

All types of first responders are eligible.

"A qualified first responder is someone who is trained to respond to or provide assistance in the event of an emergency," said Beck. "This includes firefighters, police officers or members of law enforcement, members of emergency medical services, and health care workers."

Offering the lower rate to these members of the community is a chance to show appreciation for their work.

"We offer the program to first responders as a way to show our gratitude to members of our community that sacrifice their health and safety for the greater good," said Ruppenkamp.

First time auto loan discounts

In addition to supporting the community through its first responder discounts, RTP Federal Credit Union also offers First Time Auto Loan, a program designed for first time car buyers who have limited or no credit history.

"This loan will not only fund the purchase of your vehicle with manageable terms and a competitive rate, but will also provide the opportunity to establish a positive credit history in the process," according to the credit union.

The loan requires only $500 down, a minimum of six months of employment with a current employer, a gross monthly income of at least $1,500, and no previous car loans on the applicant’s credit report. The maximum loan amount is $15,000 with terms of up to 63 months.

Supporting a vibrant community

RTP Federal Credit Union knows the importance of maintaining a vibrant, thriving community through support of its members. Whether it's through programs like those described above, or donating to local organizations, RTP Federal Credit Union understands that a strong and supported community benefits everyone.

"Part of our mission and values is investment in our community," said Beck. "We have been part of the community for over 55 years. It is important to us. These people are important to us."
