Klobuchar's Triangle campaign swing includes Fox News town hall
U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar was met by an enthusiastic crowd in Raleigh on Thursday as she spoke about her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination.
“Courage isn’t standing by yourself in a boxing ring,” she said. “Courage is whether you’re willing to stand next to people that you don’t always agree with for the betterment of this country.”
Klobuchar was also at a town hall meeting in Cary on Thursday evening, which was televised by Fox News. She will be in Charlotte on Saturday.
Klobuchar is the latest of the Democratic presidential candidates to visit the Carolinas in a build-up to Saturday's South Carolina primary and “Super Tuesday” next week, when 14 states, including North Carolina, hold primaries.
North Carolina's early voting runs through Saturday, although turnout has been much slower so far this year than in previous primary elections.
Ron Anderson, of Cary, said he supports Klobuchar for three reasons.
“She has a great platform – 100 days, 100 ways – excellent,” he said. “Two, she’s a woman, and she’s younger. We need both. And three, she can beat Donald Trump, and that’s very important.”
Klobuchar garnered only about 5% of support in a recent WRAL News poll of likely Democratic voters. Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders each garnered 22 percent support, while former Vice President Joe Biden was at 20% in the exclusive poll, conducted by SurveyUSA.
Supporters said they believe Klobuchar is the type of moderate candidate who can bring the country together.
“As splintered as we are, I like the theme of coming together,” said Laurie Cain.
Candidate visits continue through Super Tuesday
Sanders kicked off a string of visits with a Wednesday evening appearance at Greenleaf Christian Church in Goldsboro, the home church of former state NAACP leader Rev. William Barber.
Biden will visit Raleigh on Saturday. Bloomberg will join Klobuchar in Charlotte on Saturday.
Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, returns to Raleigh on Saturday.
