A community just outside of Pittsburgh is mourning a police dog who died in the line of duty.

The Johnstown Police Department said a K9 officer named Titan died Sunday.

Titan has been in the care of Officer Brian Stevens since he arrived in Johnstown in 2014 from Belgium.

"He lives with me," Stevens said. "He stays with me 24 hours a day."

Titan's service ended tragically over the weekend when his team responded to a burglary in progress at the old Acme and Goodwill warehouse building in the Woodvale section of the city.

Police said they took two suspects into custody, and Stevens and Titan were called in to look for three others. As they were searching on the fourth floor, police say Titan fell through an unsecured open elevator shaft.

A rescue effort was conducted, but Titan died.

Police said Titan's work was not in vain -- all five suspects were located and taken into custody.

The department said it will remember Titan, who served honorably and bravely. The dog will be driven to a funeral home on Monday by police escort.
