Julia Sims: Motherhood is messy

I've always fantasized about being that "put-together" mom. You know, the one who is always well-dressed, on time and on point. But let's face it, if it hasn't happened 10 years into this gig, it's likely never going to happen.

I’ve always fantasized about being that “put-together” mom. You know, the one who is always well dressed, on time and on point. But let’s face it, if it hasn’t happened 10 years into this gig, it’s likely never going to happen.

I’m the mom who lives in a baseball hat. How bad is it? Years ago, when I picked Will up from preschool one day, his teacher didn’t recognize me because my hair was brushed and in place ... sans hat.

But, ya know what? Will still loves me.

I’m the mom who signs up to bring plates and napkins to school only to realize all we have are Halloween-themed plates and napkins. It was Christmas.

And guess what? The kids thought it was funny.

I’m the mom who lets her son skip a shower two nights in a row because we rented some really good movies on Netflix and neither of us wanted to move from the couch.

How’d that turn out? We both had a really fun (albeit stinky) weekend.

There are so many days I feel like I’m the only one who just can’t get her act together!

But then ... a friend shows up. The friend I admire because she always seems to hold it together in the midst of chaos. She pulls up in a car filled with kids and a huge slice of pizza sitting on the console. It’s not in a box. There’s no napkin underneath it. When she sees you eye it, she explains she’s taking lunch to her husband.

That’s when you know there are other moms in your same boat: Motherhood is messy.

And guess what? I bet her husband loved that pizza.

Julia Sims is the mom of one and a former reporter for WRAL-TV, who now works for the city of Raleigh. She regularly appears here on Go Ask Mom.
