Julia Sims: Eating my way through elementary school

It all started back in kindergarten. Mind you, when Will was in kindergarten, not me.

Since my culinary repertoire is lacking, (especially when it comes to lunchbox meals) peanut butter and jelly sandwiches became the go-to main course for Will’s school lunch. The next thing I knew, I was making one for Will and one for me! I don’t think I’d had a pb&j since I was in grade school and boy, I’d forgotten about that creamy deliciousness. I was hooked!

But it didn’t stop there. No sir. Soon our kitchen cupboards held Doritos (!!) and potato chips. The king of junk foods!

It all seemed innocent enough at the beginning — Will would have some chips and I’d have a handful (or two!).

Oh, and did I mention the ice cream bars??

Sadly, reality set in. At my last yearly physical, my doctor pointed out I’d gained 15 pounds! How could that be?? Well, here’s the thing - kids go at 120 mph every day. Not so much with us parents.

So while I admit I’ve enjoyed my multi-year trip down “foodie” lane ... I’ve decided it’s the end of the road for me. It’s time to clean up my act and get back to my healthy eating.

Wish me luck ...
