Storms cause damage, injure 19-year-old in Johnston County

A 19-year-old man in Johnston County is recovering in the hospital from a head injury after a tree fell on his truck.

Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell said his father, a lieutenant with the sheriff’s office, found him as he drove into work.

The tree fell on Hunter Reliford’s truck while he was driving on Bizzell Grove Church Road on Saturday.

"Lt. Reliford had just checked on for duty, and within miles of his house and stopped at the wreck scene, unknowing it was his son," said Bizzell.

Hunter Reliford was taken to WakeMed with non-life-threatening injuries and was undergoing X-rays for a possible head injury.

"We are asking our citizens to continue to keep the family in your thoughts and especially your prayers that Hunter will continue to improve," said Bizzell.

Other storm damage was reported in Johnston County on Saturday as severe weather moved through the county.

Straight-line winds blew a metal roof off of a shed on Wiggins Road.

"One big boom is what it sounded like ... it was so quick," described Brookie Stephenson.

Stephenson said that matters could have been worse.

"We're just so thankful it was not our house left like that," she added.
