MyComputerCareer holds service day to honor prisoners of war, those missing in action

Many will honor prisoners of war and those missing in action on Friday by serving the needs of veteran families.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day is a special day for one company that promotes veteran causes year-round.

“It is one that tends to fly below the radar a little bit,” said Bruce Ackerman, chief marketing officer for MyComputerCareer.

Ackerman said the company places a special focus on this day.

In the past, it's sponsored a stock car and driver to make the cause more visible.

“You know, the slogan for POW/MIA Day is, ‘You're not Forgotten,’” Ackerman said.

Since World War I to 2019, more than 83,000 military and civilian personnel are missing in action. From the Vietnam War alone, 1,592 are still unaccounted for.

MyComputerCareer is working with the local non-profit Military Missions in Action to serve the needs of veterans' families.

Many company employees can take a half-day off with pay while they work on service projects like repairing homes or assembling care packages for soldiers on deployment.

“We've put together a team of about 100 people for the 20th, and we're going to go out into these different locations and serve in whatever way they want us to,” Ackerman said.

He said the cause is a good fit for their company: Between 25 and 30% of its students are veterans seeking to transition into an IT career.

“We genuinely care and are committed to military veterans and improving their lives if we can, whether it's through our education or in other ways,” Ackerman said.
