'It's heartbreaking': Coworkers remember life of man found in car rescued from Cape Fear River
Employees of The George on the Riverwalk watched as crews pulled a red Dodge Challenger from the Cape Fear River on Friday. They didn't know that one of the bodies that water rescue crews pulled from the water was their coworker, Frederick Brock.
"Looking back -- that we literally watched our friend be pulled out of the water -- it's heartbreaking," said Aaron Rinere, coworker of Brock.
Rinere is the kitchen manager of The George on the Riverwalk, a popular eating spot in downtown Wilmington. There's a view of the Cape Fear River and the historic Cape Fear Memorial Bridge there while you dine. It's also only a couple blocks away from where witnesses say that the Dodge Challenger drove off a pier and into the Cape Fear River.
Rinere told WECT that he was a kind a funny person, always serving up "playful energy along with great food."
Brock cooked for about one year at The George.
"You get that news, and you just go black," said Rinere. "In the middle of cooking and we just lost one of our own."
WECT reports it is not yet known why the two men drove into the water that night.
