Cumberland County shooting suspect makes first appearance in court

More details surfaced Tuesday evening about the shooting and house fire that left a Cumberland County neighborhood locked down by police for hours on Monday.

Several 911 calls made by neighbors, loved ones and even one of the victims emerged along with more about how the victims knew the suspect.

A deadly shooting, a fire and a manhunt all came out of a tight-knit community near Fayetteville. In 911 calls shared with WRAL, you can hear it all unfold as callers talk to dispatchers.

Through tears, a caller describes the suspect, Mattias Bagby, as a neighbor facing eviction. She said he was armed and said he shot her husband, Richard Yarborough, who died from his injuries.

Bagby appeared in a courtroom on Tuesday afternoon. He faces numerous charges, including first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Several 911 calls are intense and give context on how the tragedy played out in addition to how the suspect knew these victims.

"He's got a gun. He set his own house on fire," said one neighbor. "Past our house, we all share a drive."

On the other side of the driveway, another caller is on the phone with dispatchers.

"My neighbor come up and shot me," said David Matthews.

Matthews goes on to say he was shot twice, once in the chest. Both callers said Bagby was in the process of being evicted.

"He lives in the house right back of us," Matthews continued. "He's got an eviction notice on the 27th of this month."

At one point in the call, Matthews and his wife say the suspect entered their home. The dispatcher advised them to barricade themselves in a safe spot shortly before deputies got to the house. Emergency crews took Matthews to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

There were still investigators on the scene on Tuesday. Neighbors said they were in shock by what happened.

If convicted, Bagby could face life in prison or the death penalty. Authorities are holding him at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond.
