One percent flips presidential race in Nash County

You've heard it probably too many times - every vote matters. That was literally the case in Nash County on Tuesday night when just a few dozen votes flipped the county from red to blue.

The fight for votes is not an easy one in Nash County where things could go either way.

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden came out ahead in the county by just 49 votes.

"I can accept the results if I feel like it's been done correctly, but if you start hearing rumors - I start second guessing things," said Vicki Curin, a Nash County voter.

"I say, 'Wow, 40 votes, that's too close for comfort,'" added David Richardson, another Nash County voter.

Residents are on edge about the results, but Nash County Board of Elections chair Kelly Shore said there wasn't a mistake.

"I do realize it's a close race, especially here in Nash County, but that's not really our job. Our job is to make sure that however many people turn out to vote, and however they do vote, that their vote is counted," she said.

Close margins are not new to Nash County. In 2016, President Donald Trump won the county with just 84 more votes than Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton.

East Carolina University professor Dr. Jody Baumgartner said North Carolina as a whole is turning more purple.

"We're seeing the the effect of the influx of non-North Carolinians moving here, many of whom are from northern states, right. So bringing their their blue influence with them," said Baumgartner.

Influence is what candidates on both sides needed to win Nash County, but counting the votes is a different process.

"The job of the local board of elections office is the same - whether one voter turns out or whether every registered voter in Nash County turns out," said Shore.

The county has 24 precincts.

Shore said the elections board didn't run into any problems on election night.
