Female athletes push for uniform changes

It's a quiet problem that's plagued female athletes for years, and now change could be coming.

The Orlando Pride made changes to their uniforms, switching from white shorts to black. The move was made to protect athletes who may be on their period. It's a move that people have been wondering if the N.C. Courage will make.

One soccer group in Raleigh, Trinity Soccer Academy in Holly Springs, made the change from white shorts several seasons ago to make their players feel more comfortable playing the game.

"It's important to listen to those aspects and make them comfortable," said Trinity Soccer Academy Girls Director Mike Dixon. "If they're comfortable, they're going to play better."

Athletes in the area are praising the move by the Pride, who will officially debut the uniforms later in March.

"I played some in school, then just playing recreationally after school and I think it's an amazing idea." said Leslie Desmond, a soccer player. "It's something females think about that males don't deal with, and something we want is the appropriate uniforms with everything under control."

Desmond said the move is a big move forward for women's sports over the last few years.

"In the past, people didn't really talk about it," Desmond said. "Now they broke the mold. Now there are more female athletes out there. There's more awareness in female athletes, I think it's come out and it's awesome."

WRAL News reached out to the Courage to see if they will make a similar move.
