One of Raleigh's iconic oak trees cam down Thursday as onlookers gathered to say their farewells to a tomorrow, and the process promises to be a spectacle that will disrupt downtown traffic.

One of the oldest and most iconic trees in Raleigh is no more.
Crews spent much of Thursday cutting down the giant Willow oak in Nash Square.
City officials say the tree had become a safety hazard because of its age and disease. It is thought to be more than 100 years old.
The effort to take the tree down occurred for most of the day on Thursday, with crews closing the 200 block of West Martin Street between South McDowell Street and South Dawson Street at 7 a.m.
Workers were forced to bring in a crane to remove some of the larger limbs and the trunk.
Reaction to the move exploded on social media over the loss of the willow oak, which served as a backdrop for many photos and videos that were taken in Nash Square over the years.
