Over a dozen cars broken into at University Hill apartments in Durham

Thieves broke into more than a dozen vehicles at University Hill Apartments in Durham Sunday night.

Many of the residents woke up Monday morning puzzled as to how this happened, as the parking lot at the complex is gated and a code is required to get in.

“I’m completely shocked,” said Ebun Olunuga, whose roommate informed her that both of their cars were broken into. “I looked around and saw glass everywhere.”

Olunuga said many of her neighbors were victims too.

“Everyone was cleaning trying to figure out what to do,” Olunuga said.

Break-ins across the triangle

The break-ins at University Hill are the latest in a string of break-ins to hit the Triangle in July.

On Thursday, over 35 cars were broken into in Durham in a 24-hour period at the West End Apartments.

Just down the road in Raleigh, two break-ins at apartment complex parking decks happened in downtown Raleigh.

On July 17, WRAL News counted at least 11 cars with windows smashed at The Devon Apartments on N. Boylan Avenue, which has a separate parking deck for residents.

Just days later on July 20, over a dozen cars were broken into at The Link Apartments in downtown Raleigh. Link, like University Hill, is a gated complex.

After the break-ins, University Hill sent out an email to residents warning them to lock up their vehicles and remove all valuables.

Olunuga is still in disbelief it happened to her.

“I didn’t have anything of value in there,” Olunuga said.
