The North Carolina Department of Transportation plans to close southbound Interstate 85 in Orange County beginning Monday night to resurface the highway from the Durham County line to just east of the I-85/Interstate 40 split.

Crews will close I-85 South at the U.S. Highway 15/501 South split (Exit 174A). N.C. Highway 147 West will also be closed at Exit 16B to keep traffic from merging onto I-85 South.

Nightly closures will take place for approximately 10 nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Should work take place on Friday and Saturday nights, the closures will be in effect from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The DOT is detouring southbound traffic on I-85 to U.S. 15/501 South (Exit 174A) to I-40 West back to I-85. Drivers traveling westbound on N.C. 147 to I-85 South will be detoured to U.S. 15/501 South (Exit 16B) to I-40.

Other detours will be advertised on overhead digital message signs, changeable message boards and traffic control signing. Law enforcement will also be on site to help control traffic.

Once work is complete on the southbound portion, the DOT will begin work on the northbound portion.

The entire project is expected to be complete by mid-September.
