I-40 exit ramp reopens in Cary after search for driver

The Interstate 40 exit ramp at Harrison Avenue was closed for about three hours Sunday as police searched for a driver who was experiencing what they described as a "mental health issue."

Authorities said that the initial call came in as a welfare check for a vehicle that had pulled onto the shoulder of the Harrison Avenue exit ramp.

When officers arrived, the car had been abandoned.

The driver of the vehicle, who is a juvenile who had a driver's license, was located and taken to a local hospital just before 8:20 p.m.

Authorities said they were able to keep in touch with the teen on a cell phone during the search and family members have been notified.

Highway Patrol troopers assisted with the situation.
