Hundreds lose power in Durham, where multiple stoplights out

Around 6,000 customers were left without power Monday in south and southeast Durham after equipment was damaged.

According to the Durham Police Department, before 2:15 p.m. a power pole and power lines were damaged on Cornwallis Road near Yorktown Avenue.

The crash knocked out stoplights at multiple intersections, which drivers should treat as 4-way stops:

  • N.C. Highway 55 between Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway and Interstate 40
  • T.W. Alexander Drive and Cornwallis Road
  • Yorktown Avenue and Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway

The cause of the damage to the power lines is still under investigation.

At 5:30 p.m., power had been restored to nearly every customer affected , and around 460 were still without power.

According to Duke Energy's outage map, power may not be restored to everyone until between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Two major outages were in the the areas of Sherron Road at Northern Durham Parkway and along N.C. Highway 55, which runs parallel to S. Alston Avenue at Carpenter Fletcher Road.
