Hoke man charged with beating girlfriend's mom, daughter
A Raeford man faces accusations that he severely beat his girlfriend's 67-year-old mother and assaulted her 8-year-old daughter Wednesday.
Sheriff Hubert A. Peterkin said that Dwayne Gillom, 48, was involved in a fight in the Puppy Creek Mobile Home Park, 303 Beagle Drive.
The sheriff said that Gillom pushed the girl, and Wyvonie Cathey jumped in to protect her granddaughter. He threw a potted plant at Cathey, pushed her to the floor and beat with a wooden riot baton, Peterkin said.
Gillom then stole his girlfriend's SUV and drove away, hitting the landlady's car as she was stepping out of it, Peterkin said.
Cathey suffered a fractured right arm and left thumb and numerous lacerations to her face and head, among other injuries, the sheriff said. She remained hospitalized Friday.
Gillom's girlfriend, Yvonnie Rutherford, took out a domestic violence protection order against him in January. The order stands until January 2012.
Rutherford's stolen SUV was found in Fayetteville, and Gillom surrendered to the Hoke County Sheriff's Office Friday after U.S. marshals had joined the search for him.
He was charged with
- assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury
- felony aggravated assault on a handicapped person
- felony domestic violence protection order violation with a deadly weapon
- felony larceny of a motor vehicle
- misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon with a minor present
- misdemeanor assault on a child under age 12
- two counts of misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor hit and run
Gillom was placed in the Hoke County jail under a 48-hold domestic violence hold. After that, he will be granted a $500,000 secured bond.
