An inmate died after being found unresponsive in his cell at the Hoke County Detention late Saturday morning, Sheriff Hubert A. Peterkin said.

Cofrey Deshon Dockery, 34, of Raeford, did not respond to an detention officer doing a routine security check at 11:15 a.m., Peterkin said. The detention officer entered Dockery's cell and found him unresponsive.

EMS was contacted, and the on-duty nurse performed CPR on Dockery. EMS continued CPR while taking him to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Doctors pronounced Dockery dead at 12:15 p.m., the sheriff said.

Peterkin said he has asked the State Bureau of Investigation to help investigate the death.

Dockery had been incarcerated in the Hoke County Detention Center since April 30.
