Highway Patrol: Speed caused crash that killed truck driver, toddler on I-95
An adult and a child died when the tractor-trailer they were in overcorrected at a high rate of speed and struck a passenger car along Interstate 95 Thursday morning, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The crash closed the northbound lanes for hours, creating miles of backups.
Troopers said Tony Terrell Weeks Jr., 31, from Onancock, Virginia, was driving too fast and caused the crash. The tractor-trailer overturned, killing Weeks and a two-year-old boy. The child's mother, 30, was injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment for her injuries.
The driver in the car that was struck is expected to be OK, according to authorities.
The crash was reported before 4 a.m., closing I-95 near Exit 46 for N.C. Highway 87 near Fayetteville. The road reopened by 7a.m., but delays remained in the area for one hour.
The truck involved in the crash was hauling vegetables from Moore & Porter State Farmer's Market in Georgia. Bell peppers, ears of corn and fresh produce boxes littered the side of the road hours after the accident.
