A Raleigh woman was charged with driving while intoxicated after a man was killed on Interstate 40 when he stopped to fix a trailer that came loose.

Mildo Velasquez's trailer came loose on I-40 on Sunday night in Duplin County. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said he was killed when he stopped to reattach the trailer.

A three-vehicle crash happened around 8:15 p.m. near the Wallace exit for Highway 41.

Troopers believe Raylee Greico, of Raleigh, was impaired by marijuana. The 19-year-old was charged with DWI, underage DWI and failure to reduce speed.

Velasquez, of Willard, was heading east on the interstate and pulling a small utility trailer with a truck. Troopers say the trailer came off the hitch with the safety chains holding it on.

Velasquez stopped on the interstate, according to the Highway Patrol, as did another driver who was a family member.

Troopers said Greico didn’t slow down and struck the car. The car then hit the trailer, causing it to jack knife and hit Velasquez, who died at the scene.

More charges are possible for Greico.

Velasquez and another driver with the family are facing charges related to the incident, including improper parking on the highway.
