A Craven County firefighter was killed while responding to a call on Thursday.

The State Highway Patrol said Ralph Deblasi, 62, was on the way to a call in his own car when the accident happened on Brices Creek Road.

Troopers said Deblasi's car went off the road in a curve when it was raining, according to WITN.

Township 7 Assistant Fire Chief Travis Blalock said Deblasi had to be extricated from the vehicle.

"Ultimately, the firefighter involved in the accident passed away from his injuries," said Blalock.

"This is an extremely difficult time for all involved, but as a department, with the support of fellow first responders, we are working diligently to support the fallen firefighter's family and extend to them our deepest condolences," he added.
