Durham man wins $2M lottery prize: Here are the NC homes he could buy

Winning the lottery is something we all dream of doing.

What would you do with the money? Would you go to work the next day? What kind of house would you buy?

HGTV even has an entire show, “My Lottery Dream Home” dedicated to this concept.

On Monday, the North Carolina Lottery issued a news release about a Durham man named Neil Becker. On Friday, Becker walked into a store on Hillsborough Road, bought a scratch-off ticket and walked out a millionaire. Well, sort of.

The scratch-off ticket was for $2 million, but once he chose the lump sum and took out taxes, he was left with $855,006. It’s about 43% of the initial $2 million prize.

Becker told the lottery employees that he's going to use his winnings to buy his daughter a house.

We started thinking, how much house could you get for that amount of money? Ultimately, it depends on where you want to live.

In Orange County, you could buy a 3,000-square-foot house on more than an acre of land near Eno River State Park. The four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom listing is located at 5519 Jomali Drive in Durham.

However, if Becker’s daughter wants to live in downtown Durham, she can get 897 square feet of prime real estate in a brand-new, single-bedroom condo at 400 West Main St.

Over in Raleigh, she could buy probably buy a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom duplex. It’s 2,339 square feet and located at 909 East Martin St.

If Becker’s daughter has several kids, she could buy an 11-bedroom house at 2720 Poole Road. The listing says it's walkable to both the Raleigh Country Club and to WakeMed. The sellers are pitching this property as a teardown for an investor who wants to "expand their portfolios."

If Becker's daughter is a golfer, she could buy a home set on Pinehurst's number 7 course. Perhaps she could rent out the property at 225 Hearthstone Road during the 2024 U.S. Open for as much as sellers are asking.

If she's more of a beach girl, she could even afford a two-bedroom, two-bathroom bungalow on Bald Head Island at 8 Sabal Palm Court.

The thing is, if Becker had scratched off this ticket 10 or 15 years ago, his money would have gone a lot further.

WRAL News checked past tax records, and a lot these homes have more than doubled in value. In fact, that 11-bedroom one selling for $850,000? It's current tax assessment is less than $300,000.

The Triangle real estate market is healthy indeed.

Becker also said he also wants to buy his best friend a car.

With the average new vehicle being almost $50,000, Becker might want to consider some alternatives.

By the way, WRAL News did try to reach out to Becker.

WRAL News called one guy and asked if he was Neil Becker. He said he was, and when we asked if he recently won the lottery, he said, “I hope so! You know something I don't know?!”
