Heavy rain leads to evacuations, landslides in western NC

Heavy amounts of rain created flooding and land slides in Polk County overnight, resulting in rescues and evacuations.

Crews from across the county have been responding to a number of calls.

Michelle Breedlove and nine other neighbors became stranded after heavy rain washed out parts of Horse Show Gap Road in Tryon.

"I have never seen anything like this," Breedlove said. "None of this was here, you could see the road perfectly fine when I got home."

Polk County officials said Horse Show Gap Road is one of dozens of secondary roads covered in mud and water throughout the area.

JJ Sauve from the Polk County Sheriff's Office said at least one man had to be evacuated from his home.

Sauve asked residents to be prepared for more flash flooding and be cautious while driving.

“Just be vigilant," he said. "Pay attention to those weather forecasts and know your escape routes."

Experts say, if you've had flooding in your area before, you are going to have flooding again.

With more rain on the way Wednesday, Breedlove is concerned the damage could get worse, leaving her and her neighbors stranded for days.

“We need to figure out where it’s coming from and fix the problem," she said.

First responders are expecting another busy day Wednesday, and with more rain forecast in the mountains, they are standing by for emergencies.
