Wednesday evening forecast

Wednesday night will be colder than the night that preceded it, but a warming trend is on the way.

"It felt like January," WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said, adding that the colder air is the result of a high-pressure system that will usher in calm air, which will bring the frigid air closer to the ground. "Tomorrow morning's commute will be clear and cold."

The high temperature on Wednesday topped out in the mid-40s and Thursday will see a high around 50 degrees, Maze said.

A hard freeze Wednesday night will precede the warmer air, Maze said.

He said temperatures throughout central North Carolina will range from the upper teens to the mid-20s.

Beyond Thursday, the high temperatures will rise each day, Maze said. Friday could see a high temperature in the low 60s.
