Happy first day of March and start to meteorological spring.

As meteorologists, we break down the four seasons into three even months to make for easier record-keeping.

Meteorological spring consists of March, April, and May. Astronomical spring begins on March 20 uses the equinox as the turning point of seasons.

Warm weather lovers, you are in for a treat. The seasonal temperature outlook from the Climate Prediction Center calls for a greater chance of above normal temperatures in North Carolina and the southeast.

When comparing the new 30 year climate data (through 2020) to the previous 30 year data (through 2010), the average spring temperatures have increased across NC.

The seasonal precipitation outlook does not tell us much. There are equal chances of above or below normal precipitation.

The drought outlook shows that the drought may persist in the southeastern part of NC and grow at the coast and toward the piedmont.

Warmer temperatures provide fuel for thunderstorms to strengthen. The warmer than normal temperatures this upcoming spring may increase our risk for severe weather in NC.
