Handcuffed man escapes custody of police at Virginia jail

The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office in Virginia is searching for Gary Robert Johnson II, who they say escaped police officers after they took him into custody.

Johnson, 34, is described as a Black male with black dreadlocks that have been cut and black eyes. He stands 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds.

The sheriff's office is still searching for Johnson, who escaped the Meherrin River Regional Jail in Alberta, Va., where he was in custody of the South Hill Police Department. The agencies did not say why Johnson was in custody.

Officials believe Johnson had his cell phone with him and used it to call someone to pick him up after escaping.

He was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt, black joggers, sneakers and a stocking cap. He is handcuffed in the front.

The South Hill Police Department, Virginia State police, the Mecklenburg County Sheriffs Office, the Dinwiddie Sheriff’s Office and Alberta police are all involved in the search.
