Habitat for Humanity in Beaufort County could use your help

The Habitat affiliate is working to build a home in Chocowinity and needs extra hands to drive in the final nails on the project.

This construction effort is a chance to take part in a much larger enterprise. Habitat organizations across North Carolina have banded together with the State Employees Credit Union Foundation for the $10 million Mountains-to-the-Sea Challenge.

The effort will lead to the construction or renovation of 100 Habitat homes when it ends in early March. Once a Habitat affiliate finishes a challenge home, SECU buys the mortgage from the affiliate, providing the capital necessary to turn around and build another house.

This challenge is the first project of its kind and scope to be undertaken by any state's Habitat for Humanity organization. And project by project, the homes are being completed.

But the Beaufort County house has faced difficult circumstances due to the weather – more specifically, Hurricane Florence.

"We really need volunteers to get this house finished in time," said Greg Kirkpatrick, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of North Carolina, the state support organization that has been responsible for orchestrating the moving parts of the Challenge. "Habitat of Beaufort County has faced a lot of setbacks due to Hurricane Florence this fall, but now they're in the position to finish, if they just find the people to get it done."
