Graduation celebrates a milestone achievement in a young person's life.

Sadly, Miracle Jeffers was t-boned by a truck Friday and could not attend her big day at E.E. Smith High School.

Her grandfather, Bobby Jeffers, knew how important it was for her to walk across the stage, so he stepped up to help. While he didn't walk across the stage Monday morning, he was there to hear her name called and pick up her diploma.

For her grandfather, he knows how difficult it was for her to miss the ceremony.

"She wanted to be here," Bobby Jeffers said. "It was important for her to be here. She's a golden bull at heart and she really wanted to be here."

Jeffers accepted his grandaughter's high school diploma while she was in the hospital recovering from a car accident.

The accident happened on Hope Mills Road in Fayetteville. Miracle Jeffers said she didn't remember much in-between the accident, and when she woke up.

"The man that was driving the truck went like 50 or 60 mph and he t-boned my door," Miracle Jeffers said. "When he hit me, all I know is everything went black. When I woke up, I was inside Cape Fear Valley [Hospital]."

Miracle Jeffers was later transferred to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill with several broken bones and internal bleeding. She watched the graduation ceremony from her hospital bed after going through three surgeries since Friday.

Miracle Jeffers may not have been able to attend her graduation in person, but she was not forgotten.

"Miracle Jeffers was in an accident. She's doing okay, she's healing [and] she's recovering," E.E. Smith High School Principal Larry Parker said during the ceremony. "Miracle, if you're watching, we love you [and] we appreciate all that you did all this year. Get well soon."

Missing the graduation wasn't the only thing she was upset about, according to her grandfather, as she was supposed to start school at Fayetteville Tech Community College in the fall.

"The other thing she was a little upset about is she was furthering her education," Bobby Jeffers said. "She was supposed to start at FTCC, so that's going to be postponed for a while."

Miracle Jeffers said she hasn't given up on her dream of going to FTCC and eventually transferring to a four-year school to complete her education.
