Girl hit on U.S. 70 has died

The 12-year-old girl hit by an alleged drunk driver Thursday night on U.S. Highway 70 in Wayne County has died, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Troopers said Heather Weir ran out into traffic and was hit by a pick-up truck driven by James Brooks Jr., 67, of New Bern. Troopers determined that Brooks had been drinking and charged him with driving while impaired.
