Surging gas prices hit significant milestone

The rising prices at the gas pump will be another issue Federal Reserve leaders will be considering Wednesday.

Gas prices are rising for the third straight week. Here at this Valero in Cary, it’s costing drivers $3.44.

The latest data from AAA this morning shows the national prices jumped another 2 cents overnight to $3.52. North Carolina is holding steady at $3.31.

The last time gas prices were up on a year-over-year basis was late December 2023, according to AAA.

Gas Buddy said the reason stems from the season we’re in. Gasoline demand is rising as more people are getting out, combined with the summer gasoline switchover and continued refinery maintenance.

It happens every year as refineries shut down for maintenance and switch over to more expensive summer fuel.

Another problem: Russian energy infrastructure has been targeted in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Gas Buddy said things should slow down in the next few weeks. Positive data indicates that refinery output is starting to increase which is a sign that the peak of maintenance season could be behind us.
