Gas leak delays buses, prompts some evacuations in Durham

The Durham Fire Department responded to a gas leak involving a 30-thousand gallon tank Thursday afternoon.

Before 3 p.m., emergency crews, including the gas company, were on the scene at Angier Avenue near Pleasant Drive.

Sky 5 flew over the scene, capturing video of the evacuated area.

Residents within a quarter-mile radius of the leaking propane tank, from Cortes Street to Jones Circle, have been asked to leave, according to the Durham Fire Department.

The leak has also caused delays for buses operating near I-885 and Miami Boulevard.

Radhen Patel say's he doesn't know where he will go while crew are making the repairs.

"I really don’t know. It’s problematic. If I have to be out until 10," Patel said. "I don’t have anywhere else to go. I need to go get dinner, I need to get rest, it’s been a long day. And it’s also super hot today."

Hayley Faircloth lives on Angier Ave, firefighters turned her away when she tried to get her loved ones out of her house.

"I tried to rush to get to my sister and my niece and they would not let me go get my three year-old niece," Faircloth said. "They would not let me drive down the road. They told me I had to walk if I wanted to go get her. So that’s what I tried to do and then got told that I shouldn’t walk and I still did because it’s my little sister and my little niece."

Faircloth says she wants everyone to be safe, but it's still very fustigating having no where else to go.

"What are supposed to live on the kids have to get to bed or have school tomorrow, or people who have work tomorrow. What are we supposed to do," Faircloth said.

Angier Avenue, which was previously closed between Cortez Drive and Jones Circle, has now reopened.

North Carolina Central University issued a campus alert for students and staff saying:

"Due to suspicion of a gas leak, the Shepard Admin Bldg is currently being evacuated. Additional details will be provided when available."
