A ruptured gas main prompted North Carolina State University officials to evacuate one building and close a main thoroughfare on campus Monday morning.

A contractor hit a 2-inch gas line at Dan Allen Drive and Faucette Boulevard shortly after 9 a.m., a PSNC Energy spokeswoman said.

Traffic was diverted off Dan Allen Drive, a main north-south route across the N.C. State campus, but traffic on nearby Western Boulevard wasn't affected.

The Weaver Laboratory building was evacuated for a short time as a precaution, university spokesman Keith Nichols said.

The gas line was capped by 9:30 a.m., and workers were trying to repair the damage.

Dan Allen Drive was reopened by 10:30 a.m., but Faucette Drive west of Dan Allen was expected to remain closed until early afternoon, N.C. State spokeswoman Chrstine Klein said.
