Beefing up its commitment to providing more retail and other amenities to Research Triangle Park, the Research Triangle Foundation is bringing a food and beverage complex to the Frontier Campus.

Fullsteam Brewing will open a second location in Boxyard RTP next year, officials announced at a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday.

Hundreds showed up Tuesday morning to celebrate the start of construction on a space that, when completed, will bring dining, entertaining and shopping to the Research Triangle Park.

Among those is Durham-based Fullsteam Brewing.

Fullsteam founder Sean Lilly Wilson spoke at the ceremony.

"I know this space pretty well," he said. "When I lived in suburban Philadelphia, my mom actually worked for IBM and she trained in RTP. There’s a lot happening here, and we’re super excited to be a part of it."

The concept for Boxyard RTP, which utilizes repurposed shipping containers, was inspired by a similar facility built in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Boxyard RTP is set to open in spring 2020. The project will cover 12 acres in the larger area of land designated as Park Center that is adjacent to I-40.

“I can think of no better place than here in RTP, this fusion of industry and agriculture and innovation, to showcase our second location," Wilson said. "We fell in love with Boxyard’s creative design, and we truly appreciate their commitment to local. This could have been any big box concept. This could have been ‘any town U.S.A.’. And it’s through the vision of all the people behind this project that I’m standing before you today."
