If you're looking for a self-guided or solo fishing experience, visitors can grab a spot at Charles Creek Park, which is a block from the waterfront and "easily cast off right from the docks or launch a skiff for a wide open tour of the waterfront and the Albemarle Sound located just a couple of short miles away." Free Fishing Day is once again set for July 4 in North Carolina.

North Carolinians along with out-of-state visitors will have the opportunity to fish without having to purchase a license.

The state’s annual free fishing day was authorized by the N.C. General Assembly in 1994. It's typically fallen on the July 4 holiday.

“Free Fishing Day was created to promote the sport of fishing and is a great opportunity for families to try a new outdoor activity,” said Christian Waters, the agency’s chief of the Inland Fisheries Division.

If you do plan to fish on July 4, remember that boating areas likely will be crowded over the busy holiday weekend.

On all other days of the year, a fishing license is required for people age 16 and older. NCwildlife.org has more info on where and when you can fish. To buy a license, you can call the Commission at 888-248-6834 or visit a local Wildlife Service Agent.
