Fourth victim in Guilford County shootings dies

A 15-year-old girl shot in the head in a shooting spree Sunday near Greensboro has died, the Guilford County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.

Makayla Leigh Woods passed away at approximately 2:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Authorities said Mary Ann Holder shot six people, including Woods, Sunday in a spree described as a domestic situation that "got out of hand."

Guilford County Sheriff B.J. Barnes said Holder shot her former lover, Randal Scott Lamb, Sunday morning in the shoulder in a parking lot at Guilford Technical Community College as he left work.

Barnes said Holder and Lamb had been involved in an affair that had ended, and that Holder had taken out a restraining order against Lamb and his wife but that the order had expired. Lamb's wife had also filed an alienation of affection lawsuit against Holder, he said.

After shooting Lamb, Barnes said, Holder went to pick up her son, Zachary Lee Smith, 14 from the home of a friend where he had spent the night.

A deputy found the two inside an SUV near their home Sunday afternoon. Holder had killed herself, and her son had been shot in the head.

When investigators went to Holder’s home, they found four other children – her 17-year-old son, Robert Dylan Smith, her Hannaleigh Suttles, 8, her nephew, Richard Brian Suttles,17, and Woods.

Robert Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. Since Sunday, Woods, Zachary Smith and Hannaleigh Suttles have succumbed to their injuries.

Richard Suttles was on life support at a Greensboro hospital on Monday. His condition wasn't available Wednesday.

Investigators said Holder left notes taking responsibility for and apologizing for the shootings but offered no motive.
