Thomas Wright, a Wilmington Democrat who lost his House seat and freedom to a criminal conviction in 2008, will finish his prison term as soon as the end of this month, according to court documents.
Wright is serving a 70- to 95-month prison term on charges of obtaining property by false pretense and obstruction of justice. He has earned an early release for his work in prison, according to the Department of Public Safety. His latest projected release date is May 26.
DPS spokesman Keith Acree told the Wilmington StarNews that Wright has worked as a chaplain's clerk, a janitor, a teacher's assistant and in the kitchen.
Wright was convicted of mishandling charity contributions and of transferring funds from campaign accounts to himself.
