Former High Point police officer sentenced for role in the January 6 riots

A member of the Oath Keepers was sentenced today for her role in the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, according to the United States Department of Justice.

Laura Steele, 55, of Thomasville, North Carolina, was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison, six months of home confinement, and 36 months of supervised release.

In March 2023, a federal jury convicted Steele, a former High Point police officer, and four other co-defendants of conspiring to obstruct an official proceeding, a felony.

Steele was also convicted of obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiring to prevent an officer of the United States from discharging a duty, interfering with officers in a civil disorder, destruction of government property, and destroying evidence after the fact—all felonies.
