WITN reports forever chemicals known as PFAS have been found in a North Carolina marina in White Oak, just 30 minutes south of Fayetteville.

PFAS are harmful to the environment, and studies have linked them to health problems like cancer.

Duke environmental professor Dr. Lee Ferguson recently found PFAS in fire-fighting foams in marinas and dry stack storages for boats.

Ferguson said it only takes a small amount to create a large contamination.

"It doesn't need much firefighting foam to lead to measurable contamination," Ferguson said. "Actually one of the concerns I have is the large quantities of their use on fire suppression systems."

The waterkeeper of the White Oak marina said the next step is to work on outreach, to inform people about PFAs and how to safely remove them from water.
