Go Ask Mom

Food? Check. Gas? Check. Batteries? Check. Now it's time to prep for some extra time with the kids during Florence

Maybe you've already braved the grocery store to stock up on water, food and other necessities. Or sat in the gas line to fill up the tank. Now it's time to prepare - mentally and physically - for some potentially long days at home with the kiddos.

Maybe you've already braved the grocery store to stock up on water, food and other necessities. Or sat in the gas line to fill up the tank.

Now it's time to prepare - mentally and physically - for some potentially long days at home with the kiddos as Hurricane Florence blows her way through the region and possibly causes some pretty serious damage and power outages.

I'll have a list of 30 indoor activities for kids that you can do when the lights go out later this week here on Go Ask Mom. But here is a roundup of other content that I've put together already.

Easy Kitchen Experiments

Can you poke a straw through a potato? Or make your own lava lamp? Or test your strength using friction? Our gallery of easy kitchen experiments offer lots of family-friendly fun with stuff you probably already have in your house.

Indoor Fun

I created this gallery of blogposts a couple of years ago when we had snow day after snow day. You'll find popular slow cooker recipes (for if your power hasn't gone out) to recipes for homemade play dough to lots of other creative ways to stay busy when it's stormy outside. (Bubble wrap stomp party, anybody?)

Indoor playgrounds

If you can safely venture outside after the storm hits - and are ready for an escape - our indoor playground lists offers plenty of places for kids to get their wiggles out.

Camp Out Blueberry Muffins

Flour Power Kids Cooking Studio shared this recipe with us many years ago - and it's a favorite. All you need is some blueberry muffin mix, some oranges and a campfire or grill. Even better, clean up is a breeze with this one.

A Go Ask Mom reader also shared the recipe for another yummy campfire dessert: Baked apples. Core the apples and wrap them in heavy duty foil. Fill the empty core with butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. Seal the foil and put into the coals until the apple gets soft.

Sensory Bins

For little ones, Skill-By-Skill shares how to make sensory bins that will keep them busy for hours. (Pro tip: Be sure to put a tablecloth under the bin for easier clean up.)

Stay safe, everybody!
