Fix coming this year for crumbling Beltline pavement

Drivers on a section of Interstate 440 in Raleigh might want to hang on tight. The top layer of pavement has crumbled in spots between Six Forks and Glenwood Avenue.

"That was put on the road to help preserve it, but it’s failing earlier than it should," said NCDOT spokesman Marty Homan.

The state planned to repave that part of interstate in 2025, but it’s moving up the project a few years.

Work should begin as soon as April on a section of I-440 between Lake Boone Trail and Wake Forest Road.

In the same project, crews also will address the recurrent flooding on I-440 near Glenwood Avenue. One inlet currently drains floodwater from the road, but it easily can get clogged during flash flooding events.

"When it’s not clogged, it can adequately drain water from the roadway," Homan said. "But we’re adding several more inlets in that area,"

Homan says the scope of the repaving work could mean that it lasts over a couple of paving seasons.

The $26 million project should take a little over a year, finishing up in the fall of 2024.
