Firefighters pull woman from apartment fire

A fire Saturday around 8 a.m. left one injured and others displaced at The Trestles apartments on 2905 Red Clay Drive.

Officials said firefighters had to go through fire to pull a woman from her first floor apartment. Rescue workers performed 'life-saving procedures' on her. She was then transported to Wake Med with smoke inhalation.

Neighbors described the victim as a woman in her 80s who uses a wheelchair. They said they saw emergency workers giving her chest compressions outside the apartment building.

Battalion Chief David Whitley said he is unsure of the woman's current condition.

Witnesses said the fire started on the first floor and spread to the second and third floors. They reported hearing fellow neighbors pounding on their doors, alerting them to get out.

Neighbors were seen taking care of the those affected.

Whitley said The Red Cross was not called, as the apartment complex would provide those displaced with other apartments.

Officials said three apartments are uninhabitable. The first floor apartment sustained heavy fire damage, while the two apartments above suffered smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
