The Fayetteville Fire Department is not running a phone solicitation campaign and worries that residents may be mislead by calls seeking donations.

The Fayetteville Professional Firefighters Association is conducting the phone solicitation, selling tickets to an oldies concert. Proceeds benefit fire safety programs in Cumberland County schools, smoke detector programs and youth athletics, among others.

"The Fayetteville Fire Department does not call and ask citizens for donations, nor do we sponsor any such fundraising drives," said Fayetteville Fire Chief Ben Major.

While the firefighters association has donated to the fire department in the past, it is not doing so this year, Major said.
